In my opinion, getting a nice UPS like this is an investment. These enterprise-grade APC units should last for 10+ years, though with some recurring maintenance costs like replacing the batteries every few years. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase. This 1000VA model was plenty to power both my file-server (Xeon CPU, 4x HDDs) and my Windows desktop (AMD Athlon II X4 630, Radeon HD 6850) along with 20" and 24" LCD monitors, all using only 70% capacity.

You get what you pay for. There is a reason most large businesses use APC for the UPS and not some off brand. Kind of like Cisco in the networking world.
