The wait was definitely worth it for this one! Overall, Ghostwire: Tokyo impresses me with fun and satisfying gameplay, an intriguing story, and beautiful visuals. I never had any issues with performance or pop-in, everything ran as smooth as a hot sake. The new mode, The Spider’s Thread, presents a fun challenge for those craving more Thread Weaving action that doesn’t get stale, even after multiple rounds (or deaths). — Cassie Peterson

While the combat can become stale and predictable, the world of Ghostwire Tokyo does not. The city is stunning and a joy to explore with plenty of things to do that makes me hope we get some form of DLC or a sequel to make me book a return journey.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a game that starts off strong with a beautifully realised setting, a ravaging supernatural mystery, and strong personal stakes. Tango Gameworks presents the right kind of unnerving backdrop, free to explore different gameplay pathways now it’s not playing in The Evil Within universe. But despite haunting supernatural designs, Ghostwire: Tokyo never properly ventures into horror territory, which is odd given the pedigree of the developer. While the open-world gameplay loop is quite compelling, the shallow finger-gun combat never really evolves, even after a couple of handfuls of unlocks.

Rarely has such a big budget game been based on such a thin gameplay premise, with this bafflingly dull first person action adventure that begins to run out of steam by the end of the tutorial level.

A compelling concept and a beautifully realised world, Ghostwire: Tokyo leverages Japanese folklore and a unique combat system to provide a unique open-world experience. While some aspects of the combat feel underdeveloped and the game structure has been done-to-death, Ghostwire: Tokyo’s uniqueness helps it stand well above where you’d expect it to.
