Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 245/40R18 97V XL er et sportsligt vinterdæk, der især udmærker sig på tørre og våde veje i koldt vejr. Test og brugere fremhæver ofte det stærke greb, korte bremselængder og præcis styring, hvilket gør dækket velegnet til hurtige sedaner og coupéer i moderate vintre. Traktionen på sne er generelt overbevisende med forudsigelig og sikker køreadfærd. Komfort og støjniveau er gode for et performance‑vinterdæk, selv om kørekomforten kan føles lidt fast på grund af den stive konstruktion. Det er vigtigt at vide, at isgrebet kun er middel sammenlignet med nordiske vinterdæk, så kører man ofte på ren is, kan andre typer være bedre. Test peger også på, at især lateral aquaplaning og ydelse i dybt sjap ikke er helt i top. Nogle førere oplever desuden, at tørvejsegenskaberne er lidt mindre skarpe end hos forgængeren Pilot Alpin 4. For bilister, der primært kører på kolde, våde og let snedækkede veje og prioriterer sportslig styring, er det dog et meget stærkt og holdbart valg.

The tyres were used to drive from London to Lech in Austria in February when there was a lot of snow on the roads in the Alps. The Pilot Alpin 5 were on the front wheels of my car and 265/30 - 20 Pilot Alpin PA4 were on the rear axle. I would have preferred to have Pilot Alpin 5 on the rear axle but they are not available in this size.
